As a veteran on the wrong side, Roger can either go through reeducation--a program which will likely destroy his mind--or he and Helena can hide among the asteroids and half broken space stations of their defeated land, waiting for the day when he is caught and executed.

Determined to remain together at all costs, they choose a third way--a dangerous five year journey into the future. Things start to go wrong when, against long odds, Helena finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. With limited resources and no way to shorten their trip, they make due, working every moment to find what they need to survive. Faced with an increasingly desperate plight, it may be their hope which runs out before their supplies.

Brody Hope Unconquered A Pax Imperium Novella eBook Erik Wecks

The notion of a 'contained thriller', that is a story which takes place entirely within a constrained environment, holds tremendous appeal for me because it allows the exploration of ideas, characters and settings without the distractions of the world at large. The tension is further heightened because the environment is limited: Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window would be an entirely different movie if our protagonist could simply have gotten up out of his wheelchair and walked over to the neighbor's apartment.

Such is the case with Brody: Hope Unconquered. Erik Wecks has done a superb job of using a contained environment (a two-person spacecraft on an unstoppable/unchangeable five year journey) to create, hold, and build the tension core to the story. In a time when year-long crewed missions to Mars are under consideration, I think this is a timely exploration of just what it means to live within such an environment.

The other example of a contained environment scifi story is Hugh Howey's Wool - Omnibus Edition. I found a similar enjoyment in both Wool and Brody in terms of growing to understand the universe at large as well as the limitations of their environments.

Brody has two intertwined threads: the story of the trip through space, and a backstory thread that explores how Roger and Helena came to be on the ship, and the stakes involved for them. This backstory serves to heighten the tension of the forward storyline.

I enjoyed Brody and look forward to more.

Brody Hope Unconquered A Pax Imperium Novella eBook Erik Wecks Reviews

Q What do you get when you take a loving couple, put them in a relativistic ship with no supply margin for schedule delays and/or accidents?

A A story that goes from Sci-Fi at it's best to the depths of the darkest failure caused by typical Human traits then soars right back to shine a light on all that is good in us all.

An excellent, and Human, short story. Well done, Erik!
If you like classic science fiction, do yourself a favor - just read Erik Wecks stuff. Like all great Sci Fi, it's not about the tech, it's about the characters, the challenges and struggles they face. I am pretty sure at this point I have read everything written from this universe, and I have immensely enjoyed them all. Just read it.
In the world if Sci-Fi I find that there are often two types of characters. There are the over-the-top heroes and villains that are caricatures of reality and there are the cardboard-cutout characters that fill in the spaces so the author can describe the cool new world they've created.

Erik Wecks doesn't take either path in Brody Hope Unconquered. Instead he take believable, struggling, thoughtful characters and puts them in a future setting that doesn't overshadow the people but helps to highlight the beauty, strength, foibles and frustrations of real people.
In hard science fiction sometimes the fact that technology keeps moving forward is completely overlooked, but Erik Wecks doesn't make that mistake, nor is this just science fiction.

The story explores relationships and the hardest of decisions between life and death and the people we love, and don't yet love.

The story is in a format that goes back and forth between the present and the past, bringing up relevant experiences the couple has had. Expanding our understanding of the decisions they make as they move through a VERY uncommon, even in this future, experience. It's not a new device in story telling, but it's often done wrong, so that the reader is left more confused than enlightened. Wecks, though, keeps things pretty clear as you move forward through the story, interrupting only when necessary to bring greater understanding.

I was moved by this story, and hope others will find it as gratifying as I did.

There is also another book based in the same universe with an unrelated action packed story by Erik Wecks called Aetna Adrift The Complete Story, and I hear there is even more on the way.
Five stars is a just reward for this short story.

I do not read a lot of short stories for many reasons but primarily because they just leave me flat, unfulfilled...wanting. A short story works for me if it is contained within a small time frame and is pretty straight forward with little or no filler to make up for weak characters, plot etc...so I just do not do many short stories.

With this offering Mr. Wecks puts it all together for me with a very good story line, characters I fell in love with right away, held my interest though out without tons of action packed scenes, was not filled with over technical info but enough, introduced a new character mid way that really added to the story and Mr. Wecks did something that I rarely like but he back tracked to earlier times but did it in a manner that I added to the understanding of the characters and helped me push this read from a 4 1/2 star to a 5 star read.

I find so many short stories leave me flat with a "What the heck, is that it" feeling but with "Brody" Mr. Wecks prompted me to smile cheerfully and feel awash with a warm fuzzy love for this short story. I think you will find the same. Try it!!

Thanks Mr. Wecks for adding to my joy of reading!
